COP 3530, Discrete Data Structures and Algorithms, Summer 1999, Homework 6 :: UFL Florida Computer Programming Homework
Class Notes: Data Structures and Algorithms Summer-C Semester 1999 - M WRF 2nd Period CSE/E119, Section 7344 Homework #6 -- Due Fri 09 July 1999 : 09.30am In class, we discussed AVL trees, binary search trees, and the breadth-first and depth-first search (BFS and DFS) algorithms for graph or tree traversal. The purpose of this homework is to exercise your knowledge and develop skills you will need for the exams and for Projects 4 and 5. Use your class notes and the text (Chapter 12) as a guide to answering the following questions. Clarifications in response to student questions are posted in red typeface. * Question 1. Given the sequence {-3, 8, 2, -1, 4, 6, -2, 10}, (a) [1 point] Diagram an unbalanced binary search tree (BST) for this sequence. Right and left subtrees of the root should differ by two levels. This means that the balance factor can be -2 or +2. (b) [1 point] Traverse the BST using DFS and label the vertices by their values as they are encountered, as you did for Homework #5. (c) [1 point] Repeat Question 1b), but for BFS instead of DFS. (d) [1 point] Tell which method - DFS or BFS - would be better for outputting the BST values in sorted order. You do not have to start at the root of the tree. To get credit, you must explain your answer in 1-2 sentences. * Question 2. Given the sequence S = {-9, 2, 4, 6, 30, -10, 1, 5, 8, 7}, (a) [1 point] Diagram a binary search tree (BST) for this sequence. (b) [1 point] Insert the values -46, -47, 38, 39, 40, and 45 into the BST you diagrammed in Question 2a) and draw the new BST (the resultant tree, after all values are inserted). (c) [1 point] Using the array representation of a binary tree that we discussed in class, diagram the array representation of the tree you obtained in Question 2a).

Egoism in Crime and Punishment :: Crime Punishment Essays
Egoism in Crime and Punishment An egocentric attitude can be seen in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Dostoyevsky's young Raskolnikov is staggeringly arrogant. Raskolnikov commits a murder and a failed robbery in the story. His journey in overcoming his ego can be seen through his initial crime, denial of failure, and acceptance of mistakes. Raskolnikov commits his initial crime out of arrogance. "The old hag is nothing.... I killed not a human being," he says. (245) Raskolnikov feels that he has justification for killing the pawn broker. He thinks that the woman has no reason to live. He believes that the woman is less than a human, and that he is a superior being. Raskolnikov thinks that he has a right to kill. After the botched crime Raskolnikov is plagued his failures. "He was conscious at the time that he had forgotten something that he ought not forget, and he tortured himself." (107) After he carelessly kills both women, and allows for the evidence to be found, Raskolnikov realizes he did not commit the perfect crime. This devastates his ego, so he tries to cling to his previous self perception. He is also plagued with feelings of guilt. His guilt, combined with the mistakes he made during the crime, shatter his self perception of perfection. When Raskolnikov surrenders he accepts his mistakes and rejects his self-centered attitude. "It was I who killed the old woman and her sister, Lizaveta, with an axe, and robbed them," Raskolnikov confesses. (476) With his surrender he not only accepts his methodical mistakes in the execution of the crime, but he sees something beyond himself. He begins to see the magnitude and horror of his act. He had taken a life. By realizing the immorality of his crime and rejecting his self glorifying mind set, Raskolnikov accepts his own humanity. In Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov's initial crime, failure, and acceptance of mistakes are his road to overcoming his ego, as well as self discovery.
My Mom Is My Greatest Influence College Essay
Iââ¬â¢ve learned through the eyes of my mother that life isnââ¬â¢t easy. My mother has come a long way after losing her mother at a very young age and growing up with her father and grandmother and five siblings, one being a twin. My momââ¬â¢s dad had to make sacrifices while raising my mom and her siblings; it wasnââ¬â¢t easy growing up without her mother, my mom put herself through college with the help of her dad. My mom has a successful career and is married and is raising a happy family. Initially I thought of a celebrity as a person with the most influence in my life, but as I thought about it, I realized my mother has had the most influence in my life, always smiling, laughing and having fun. When my mother is around itââ¬â¢s always a fun time with her, sometimes I have to say ââ¬Å"ok, mom enoughâ⬠and we laugh. My mother is always lifting others up and she always has an encouraging word for someone. My mother by far has had the greatest and most lasting impact on me; she is always there for me and has never let me down. My mother is the epitome of what it means to love unconditionally. She loves my siblings and I no matter what we do; she is always there for us and always gives us an encouraging word or quoting a verse from the Bible. My mother is the most caring person that I know, always helping people and praying for those in need. My mother would give her last to someone who needs it, especially if it means making his or her life easier. My mother would go as far as helping out her worst enemy, which I donââ¬â¢t think I could do, when I listen to my mom on the telephone sometimes she always has a positive attitude about everything regardless of whatââ¬â¢s going on in her life. She is always willing to volunteer and help the needy. In her limited free time, my mom enjoys running marathons in order to raise money for charities she supports. She raised over $3,000 for the cancer society when she ran her first marathon on behalf of my godmother who has breast cancer. My mom will be running her 8th marathon this year and only God knows whom she will be raising money for. My mom will always try to crack a joke when she knows Iââ¬â¢m not having a good day. My mom will tease me until I actually laughed and then she will say, ââ¬Å"at least I made you laughâ⬠and we would both laugh at that time. My mom is a very caring person and she always goes out of her way to make someone elseââ¬â¢s day brighter even if she isnââ¬â¢t having a good day. My friends love my mom because she is always laughing and doing whatever she can to help others. A few weeks ago a friend of mine was having some problems at home and she needed a ride to work. My mom picked my friend up everyday from school, then dropped her off at work and then went back and took her home. She told my friend that she was there for her and she wanted her to talk to her parents and tell them how she feels. My mom wasnââ¬â¢t trying to cause any problems between my friend and her parents; she just wanted to help. As usual my mom told my friend she needs to pray and ask God for direction and guidance on how she can talk to her parents. My friends say I am just like my mother, and not to mention, we look just alike. I donââ¬â¢t think that is true, I can be funny like my mom sometimes but my mom is an exceptional lady and I think everyone should be able to look up to her. My mom never gets tired of giving and doing for others, even though her life wasnââ¬â¢t a bed of roses, she never let anything get her down in spite of the trials and tribulations she faced. My mom keeps the faith no matter what and for that one reason; my mother is the greatest influence in my life.

Stratford Sherman Eight Steps Toward Integrity
After reviewing Stratford Sherman Eight Steps toward Integrity, it has different components of business ethics that businesses can use as a basic guideline. The Eight Steps toward Integrity include: doing what we say we will do, doing the right thing, taking responsibility, supporting our own weight, holistic thinking, checking the mirror, defining the rules and values. The first step is doing what we say we will do which ââ¬Å"includes keeping promises and meeting deadlinesâ⬠¦ ââ¬âand often, tough negotiationââ¬âprior to making commitments. (Stratford Sherman). Doing the right thing includes being aware of whatââ¬â¢s right and performing the right actions. This also includes accepting the consequences. Taking responsibility is simply taking responsibility for your actions. Supporting your own weight ââ¬Å"means functioning as a whole. â⬠(Stratford Sherman). Holistic thinking is ââ¬Å"an appreciation of wholeness in the world supports its practice. â⬠(St ratford Sherman). Checking the mirror is taking the time to do an honest review of you or as Sherman said pause for reflection.Defining the rules and values is simply rules about the basics that can be applied to almost anything from couples to organizations. New local health codes require that trash dumpsters be at minimum of thirty feet from the rear entrance of the building. The new laws also include that all out buildings be at minimum of six feet from the property line; Sandwich Blitz is in violation of these laws. The enclosure that houses the trash dumpster is five feet from the property line. The government inspector has told the unit manager that he would be willing to approve this if Sandwich Blitz provides the food for his department's holiday party.Dalman and the Location Manager should decline the government inspector offer for multiple reasons. One reason is because this is very unethical for business owners to accept a bribe when theyââ¬â¢re violating the law and t his is also unethical for the government inspector to make this offer. Dalman and the Location Manager need to do the right thing, take responsibility, and support their own weight. But letââ¬â¢s say that Dalman and the Location Manager accept the government inspectorsââ¬â¢ offer. What if another inspector comes to inspect the building after Sandwich Blitz have already provided the food for the inspectors department holiday party? The issue still remains that the enclosure that houses the trash dumpster is only five feet from the property line when laws require it to be six feet from the property line. Dalman and the Location Manager need to strategize other solutions such as finding out if the enclosure can be redesigned or if they can move the whole structure back only 1foot so that Sandwich Blitz will not be in violation.

Relationship of the Sexes in Greys Anatomy Essay
Relationship of the Sexes in Greys Anatomy - Essay Example The argument shall be based on an individualized character description of the characters from the show and then segue into a discussion of Season 6, episode 15 a.k.a Timewarp. This episode is the one that set the tone for the mother of Meredith Grey to become one of the most admired surgeons at Seattle Grace. The discussion shall conclude with a look at how sexism still exists in the modern medical workplace as evidenced by scenes from the show. There have been many instances on the show when women were portrayed in a sexist manner. Take for example the episode in the first season when Dr. Isobel Stevens (played by Katherine Heigl) was treated as a sex object and disrespected by the other male interns on the floor because she used to do sexy modeling assignments in order to help pay off her medical school expenses. She did not take the disrespect sitting down at the time. Instead, she chose to force the men to respect her by giving them more than they expected to see herself in the l ocker room. Thus shaming them into thinking about how they were treating her and in the end, getting an apology from those who disrespected her the most. Then we have Cristina Yang (played by Sandra Oh), the overachieving cardio-thoracic surgeon who tends to get on everyone's nerves because of her by-the-book attitude. Since she always held herself in a manner higher than the other interns, and then residents in Seattle Grace, she was able to gain their respect and then the respect of her superiors such as Derek Shepherd who saw and treated her as an equal both in and out of the operating room. Dr. Yang gained their respect and high regard by proving herself where it mattered the most, in action in the operating room. Dr. Bailey, also known as The Nazi lead the team of then medical misfits as their resident advisers. Her job was to whip them into shape in order to make them respectable and noteworthy additions to the field of medicine that they may have chosen to specialize in. She was not exactly respected by her peers in the sense of the word. In fact, the respect for her person and position was born mostly out of fear for these people because she has a tendency to be tactless and straightforward in order to get her way. That is perhaps, the only way she knows to gain the respect of her colleagues in a profession that is mostly dominated by men. Of all of the interns and now medical doctors on the show, however, none of them carried the same kind of responsibility and unfair expectations of her peers than Dr. Meredith Grey whose mother, Ellis Grey, was considered to be one of the foremost surgeons at Seattle Grace during her tenure at the hospital. Meredith chose to follow in her mother's footsteps because of the influence that her strong-willed mother had on her existence as a child. But that is perhaps also the reason why Meredith found herself lost during the first few seasons of the show. She was the most uncertain and self-doubting doctor in the hospita l because she felt that they all expected too much from her.Ã

Living in McMinden Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Living in McMinden - Essay Example She complains about the rigidness of many of the social groups in her school and notices that there appears to be a divide between people of different socio-economic status. She also feels alienated due to her ethnicity. She describes being a part of one of the first Hispanic families in town. She complains that there is not much communication between the different groups. Jenny's comments are interesting as they bring together a large varieties of different types of alienation. Growing up can be hard to do in a general way, but Jenny is perceptively analyzing both class and ethnic differences in her school. In my own experience in high school I noticed people like Jenny and saw that they had a hard time. I did what I could to help them. I grew up in a small town like McMinden, a town that was changing, and can sympathize with her feelings about the negativity at school. Suzanne provides another perspective. She clearly cares about her children, but could perhaps be described as a So ccer Mom. She is clearly exhibiting signs of role expectation for her children. She wants her children to be like her father. The path to accomplish that goal is through school athletics. She doesn't speak about what her children want, only what she wants for them. It is clear that her heart is in the right place. She seems to be a product of a difficult life and is facing up to the challenge of being a divorced mother.
